our mission
Midwifery is a woman-centered and empowering model of maternity care.
Zoe Midwifery is an independent midwifery practice, whose mission is to provide comprehensive, quality, full-scope midwifery care to women in Goshen, Indiana, and surrounding areas.
We believe the best model of health care for a woman and her family promotes a continuous and compassionate partnership, acknowledges a person’s life experiences and knowledge, includes individualized methods of care and healing guided by the best evidence available, involves therapeutic use of human presence and skillful communication.
We honor the normalcy of women’s lifecycle events. We believe in watchful waiting and non-intervention in normal processes; appropriate use of interventions and technology for current or potential health problems; consultation, collaboration and referral with other members of the health care team as needed to provide optimal health care.

Betsy McCanse
Certified Nurse Midwife
Betsy McCanse, CNM, has been in the “birth world” since 2003. She started her journey as a childbirth educator teaching Bradley classes, became certified as a doula through DONA, Int in 2005, and then started her trek to become a Certified Nurse Midwife through the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been practicing as a midwife in the Goshen area since 2013, providing full-scope midwifery care for women across their lifespans. In homes, at Goshen Birth Center, Blessed Beginnings Care Center and Goshen Hospital, she has guided over 450 babies and provided labor support to them and many others whose babies have been caught by students or ended in cesareans.
Betsy has been a preceptor to student nurse midwives since 2015. Additionally, she has taken a course in Mayan Abdominal Massage Self-Care, and is certified in clinical homeopathy and K-taping for pregnancy/postpartum. Betsy is passionate about holding the space for women to enable birth to be an empowering experience, and in taking part in shared decision making in healthcare throughout women’s lives. She finds year-round joy in blues and swing dancing, and tent camping in the warm months.

“What I love most about being a nurse is working with
and getting to know my patients.”
Alli Schade
I am a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Family is very important to me and I am blessed to have a close, loving family. My pets are important members of my family too and include a very spoiled little dog and several crazy cats.
I enjoy doing crafts and I love finding something old and unused and turning it into something new and useful.
The birth of my last child was a home birth attended by a midwife. Although it was many years ago, I remember how comfortable and stress free I felt during the birth. It was a very positive experience.
