Pregnancy & Birth

We are committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for women, in all stages of life, from all walks of life. We look forward to supporting you, wherever you may be!

Getting started

Clients are required to have a consultation to review health status and candidacy for out of hospital birth. If you are found to be low risk and healthy after this consult, the financial contract will be given for your review. If you decide to proceed and partner with SJM for care, the contract is signed, deposit is made, and the first prenatal appointment is scheduled!

What we offer

Prenatal Care & Birth

If we all agree that it’s a good fit, then we begin your prenatal care with regular visits. During each visit, in addition to answering your questions and checking on baby’s growth, we offer guidance concerning healthy pregnancy adaptations, safe herbs and supplements, and self-care for you and your family.

Appointments last 30-60 minutes and are scheduled every 4-6 weeks until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until you give birth.

Many of our clients have doula for their labor in addition to their support person, which we always welcome. If you are interested in more information on the benefits of doulas, or how to contact a doula, please bring this up with your midwife at your visit.

During your labor your midwife labors one-to-one with you, and calls in a nurse when birth is near. Some clients desire to have their other children present for the birth of the baby. We love this! Ask us about what this looks like.

Family bonding: we put baby skin-to-skin for bonding immediately after the birth and encourage breastfeeding in the golden hour.

Postpartum Care

We provide care and breastfeeding support during your postpartum period and will see you at 1-2 weeks and 6 weeks postpartum. At the final postpartum visit, we check in with you and discuss family planning and recommended women’s health screenings. We will remind you that we can continue to provide your annual women’s health care if you’d like. Learn more about Well Woman Care

Newborn Care

Nurse midwives are trained to care for healthy newborns in the first 28 days. To respect the unique relationship between mom and baby in the fourth trimester, you may choose for your newborn to be seen by a midwife in the early postpartum period. When providing newborn care, we examine the newborn at 3-5 days and 1-2 weeks postpartum. The 1 month visit will be with the family doctor, nurse practitioner or pediatrician of your choice.

K-taping

Kinesiology tape is a drug-free, safe option which can help relieve many pregnancy and postpartum symptoms including back pain, swollen feet, sciatica, carpal tunnel and mastitis. Most applications are quick and simple enough to be done as part of a regular prenatal visit, though more extensive ones will require their own visit.

Homeopothy

Homeopathy is a safe, gentle, and natural system of healing that works with your body to restore itself, relieve symptoms, and improve your overall health. As your midwives, we are able to offer a full range of homeopathic medications, in addition to other lifestyle-oriented options.

Pregnancy
& Birth Care

MIdwifery is a woman-centered and empowering model of maternity care. Midwives are trained professionals with expertise and skills in supporting women to maintain healthy pregnancies and have optimal births and recoveries. Midwives believe that mother and baby should be cared for together and provide support for mother and newborn during the postpartum period.

At Sacred Journey Midwifery, we believe that pregnancy and birth are normal and that every woman should actively participate in the decision-making and planning of her care for the best outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

What services do you offer?

We are a full-scope midwifery practice, meaning we are able to offer prenatal care, birth, postpartum and immediate newborn care, well-woman and yearly visits. We also offer FEMM consults, Fertility Awareness education, homeopathy and K-taping.

Will you see me if I'm not pregnant?

Absolutely! Part of midwifery care is being with women throughout their reproductive lifespan.  We want to help ensure you are healthy, both when you are pregnant and when you are not.

Can you do my labs/PAP smear?

Yes! We are able to perform many routine labs for pregnancy, postpartum and well-woman care.  Labs can be billed to your insurance.

Do you take my insurance?

We are considered “out of network” with insurances. We encourage those who would like to use their insurance benefits to talk to their insurance carrier about their out-of-network benefits. We are a cash-pay service, and would be happy to provide a superbill to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network benefits after the birth.

Are payment plans available?

Yes! Many families are on affordable monthly payment plans. Please reach out to us to discuss an individualized payment plan for you.

How do I make payment?

We are able to take payments in the form of cash, check, credit/debit card or ACH bank transfer.  There is an added fee for paying by card or bank transfer.

Are you part of the Blessed Beginnings Care Center?

The two businesses are separate.  If you are starting prenatal care with us and planning to birth at Blessed Beginnings Care Center, you will need to contact them for information about birthing at their facility.

Are doula services included in pricing?

No.  Please see our doula list on our resource page for doulas who serve the local area.

What is the process to get started for pregnancy care?
Clients are required to have a consultation to review health status and candidacy for out of hospital birth. If you are low risk and healthy, the financial contract will be given for your review. If you decide to proceed in partnering with SJM for care, the contract is signed, deposit is made and the first prenatal appointment is scheduled!
Do you practice delayed cord clamping?

Yes! Delayed cord clamping is our standard of care and is recommended by the WHO, ACNM, RCM, AAP and ACOG, among others.  Newborn care can be started while the cord is still intact.  Delaying clamping and cutting the cord facilitates transition to extrauterine life by increasing birth weight, blood volume and hemoglobin concentration, thereby increasing infant iron stores at 6 months of age. For term newborns, delaying the clamping of the cord for 5 minutes while the baby is skin-to-skin ensures the greatest benefit.

Do you perform ultrasounds?

We do not have the necessary equipment to perform an ultrasound, but are happy to send referrals to other providers who can perform this service and who may take insurance for this service.

“One can not actively help a woman give birth, the goal is to avoid disturbing her unnecessarily.”
